Dr Regina Betz

Dr. Regina Betz is Joint Director (Economics) at the Centre for Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM) and a Senior Lecturer at the School of Economics at UNSW. She holds a PhD from the German University of Administrative Sciences Speyer. Regina has studied economics in Germany and the UK. In her PhD she analyzed the impact of different designs of carbon trading systems on transaction costs. Before she came to Australia in 2004 she was a Senior Research Fellow at the Fraunhofer Institute (FhG ISI) in Germany. Her work focuses on climate change policies and their associated instruments, such as Emissions Trading. For more than 8 years she was a consultant to the German Environmental Ministry regarding the Kyoto Mechanisms and Emissions Trading, and was closely involved with European Union and United Nations negotiations on climate change. She developed a handbook on the Kyoto Mechanisms and has held CDM capacity-building courses in several countries. Today her research is mainly focusing on emissions trading design applying experimental economics. In 2006 and 2007 she has been working as a consultant for the National Emissions Trading Taskforce (NETT) e.g. on auctioning design for emission permits in Australia.
