Professor Mark Hoffman
Mark Hoffman’s research is focused on the design and nanomechanics of structural and functional materials for a wide range of applications. Examples of his research include design of ultralight and and porous metallic alloys, nanomechanics of silicon, mechanical properties of biological tissue and the development of high performance polymer nanocomposites for water reticulation.
Professor Hoffman obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science from The University of Sydney in 1994. In 2005 he obtained a Masters of Business & Technology from UNSW. He has held postdoctoral and research positions at The University of California, Berkeley, Tokyo Metropolitan University, The Technical University Darmstadt, Germany, and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He started at UNSW in 1997 as a lecturer in The School of Materials Science and Engineering.
Professor Hoffman has published over 100 papers in international journals of high standing and obtained over 5 million dollars in research funding since 2003. In the past 4 years he has completed 8 PhD’s and currently supervises a research group over 20, including 12 PhD’s and 3 research associates.
In 2007, he was appointed Head of School at The School of Materials Science and Engineering at UNSW.
Professor Hoffman obtained Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship in 2005 and has twice received travel fellowships from The Australian Academy of Science. He has received the UNSW Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Award twice; in 2003, for development of on-line teaching with colleagues and in 2007, for postgraduate research supervision. He is an associate editor of The Journal of The American Ceramics Society and sits on the editorial board of two other journals. He was President of the Australian Fracture Group from 2004-2006 and is currently the Australian representative on the International Fracture Congress. He is Education chair on the National Council of Materials Australia and Honorary Secretary of the New South Wales branch of the Australian Ceramic Society. In 2008, he is a Symposium Chair for the MRS International Conference on Electronic Materials and also for the International Conference on Fracture in the two fields of nanoscale issues and ceramics.
