Dr Greg Peters

Dr Greg Peters is a chemical engineer with a PhD on the fate and transport of environmental contaminants in the natural environment. He worked for seven years in corporate environmental policy, impact assessment and strategic planning for Sydney Water. This included projects like the Kurnell desalination plant, Sydney Water’s recycled water optioneering, the development of greenhouse gas emissions forecasts and the provision of advice as a member of the joint Sydney Water / Sydney Catchment Authority Drought Expert Panel. He also led Sydney Water’s efforts in the field of life cycle assessment, which lead other Australian water service providers to develop skills in the methodology.

Dr Peters is now the Sustainability Assessment Program Manager in the Water Research Centre at UNSW. In this role he manages a research program which aims to extend the application of sustainability tools into new areas and enhance the underlying methodologies. This includes performing life cycle assessment, carbon footprint calculation and contaminant fate analysis for industrial clients. He is also supported by ARC Linkage grants on improving ecological footprint calculation and sustainability frameworks for the water industry. As a Senior Lecturer in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNSW, he teaches undergraduate and postgraduate environmental subjects, advises local government on environmental matters and supports the discipline of sustainability assessment. He has delivered invited lectures in the UK and the USA, and was elected President of the Australian LCA Society in 2007.
