Research Program at UNSW in Biofuels and Higher Value Products
More than two decades R&D on high productivity processes for bioethanol production focused now on second generation technology using cellulosic biomass not in competition with food grade raw materials. The projects have involved funding and collaborative R&D with leading research agencies and companies eg Dupont, US National Renewable Energy Laboratory, US Department of Energy, BASF (Germany), CSR and Manildra (Australia). The current R&D is supported by the NCRIS Biofuels Sub-Program ($1.1m cash, $0.25m ‘in kind’ for period 2006/7 to 2010/11) to upgrade fermentation laboratory facilities to PC2 standard and by a NSW State Government Climate Action Grant (through the University of New England) and a RIRDC grant through the SA Research and Development Institute (SARDI).
