Professor Colin Ward

Professorial Visiting Fellow in the School of Biological Earth & Environmental Sciences Visiting Scientist with the CSIRO Division of Energy Technology.

He was formerly Head of the Department of Applied Geology and the School of Geology at UNSW, and has over 35 years academic, research and consultancy experience in Australia and overseas, dealing mainly with coal evaluation and the sustainable use of coal resources.

Colin leads a research group focused on advanced methods of coal characterisation and the relation of coal properties to different aspects of advanced utilisation. Other activities undertaken by the group include evaluation of sites for geological storage of CO2 (led by Lila Gurba, CO2CRC), geological factors affecting coal seam gas storage and production (partly with CSIRO), and also the characteristics and beneficial use of ash and other coal utilization products. Colin has also edited or co-edited several monographs on coal geology, as well as over 120 papers for journals and conference proceedings. He is a past President of The Society for Organic Petrology, and has recently served as a member of the NSW Coal Compensation Review Tribunal.
